The active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in mesalazine is, as the name suggests, mesalazine itself. Mesalazine is also known as 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). It is the primary component responsible for the therapeutic effects of the medication.

Mesalazine is an anti-inflammatory agent that acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract to reduce inflammation. Its exact mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it is believed to work by inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators and modulating the immune response in the intestinal mucosa
